How do I make Ushanka? You ask yourself. You can make a simple Russian Ushanka by following the simple steps stated on this page.
What you need: Fur clothe material, a pair of scissors, tailor chalk, needle and thread or sewing machine, and tape rule.
With tape rule, measure the length of the fur according to the size of the head of the person that will wear it. Add half inch to the length to give room for stitching. Measure the height according to how high you want the hat to be. Cut it out
Fold the length of the cut out fur into two, equal length and stitch. First along the opened cut breadth and second, stitch diagonally across the top two edges, represented by the broken lines. Fig A.
Re-fold the fur, now with the stitch side making the center and stitch diagonally at the top two edges and across the top along the broken lines. Fig B. Turn the fur inside out to give you the shape as in fig C.
With tailor chalk or a pen draw out a line at the front and at the back as in fig C and cut along the two lines- front and back. Roll the cut front part up to form roll-up visor, while you have you ear flaps shown drop down after you might have cut off part of the back, Fig D. Now you have your Russian Ushanka.
You can put strings at the tip of both ear flaps and tied them to the top of the hat to give the shape as in fig E. soviet-power.com
